figs!

Usually the short fig season is over before I can think of things to do with them. I wait all year for the beautiful green figs to ripen. They come, I eat a couple, and then they are quickly devoured by the birds and Japanese Beatles. That's that.... and so another year I wait.

However, this year I decided I'd pick as many as I could and quickly, before they disappeared. What the heck do you do with that many figs though?!?! Make jam!

So now I have delicious fig jam, but another question begs answering. What the heck do you do with that much fig jam? Haha!
Maybe a moist little cake flavored with fig jam and brandy? I adapted this recipe from a South African dessert known as Malva Pudding. It calls for a small amount of apricot jam.... I, of course, used fig!

Now what should I do with the purple figs I picked??

Yum Rhymes With Dim Sum!

Do you ever get really excited about left overs? You know, like there's a little present waiting for you in your fridge? Ok maybe it's just me......

Mmmm..... a left over steamed yellow cake, and a steamed lotus bun!
YUM!

Yesterday I met up with Christine (a great friend I met at fashion school) for breakfast. Well actually it was brunch, but not just brunch. It was Dim Sum!

The literal translation or meaning of dim sum is: “order to one’s heart’s content” or  “touch the heart”.
Go for dim sum just one time and you will understand the translation.

Dim sum is a light meal eaten leisurely, with tea, sometime from morning to early afternoon with family or friends and typically consisting of a selection of small steamed dumplings and buns.

Ladies push steam carts around the restaurant and you pick and chose as they come by. Without Christine, I probably wouldn't have known what most of the dishes being offered were. Lucky for me, she speaks Chinese :)
